Great Work in October

As well as building six new stations and restoring passenger services to the Northumberland Line, the project is also doing some great work in the community.

So, let's celebrate the great work in October.

Raising aspirations of over 1,300 young people

Stations contractor Morgan Sindall Infrastructure have recently delivered inspiring engagement sessions to over 1,300 young people across Northumberland and the North East. Workshops delivered have included careers fairs at Newcastle High School for Girls and a careers conference for Newminster Middle School.

In addition to these workshops, they have also attended four assemblies as a follow up from their continued support for the ‘Marvellous Makers’ summer reading challenge at South East Northumberland libraries. They presented a prize which included a box of construction LEGO and 1000 LEGO pieces for their class to each of the ‘Marvellous Makers’ summer competition winners’ schools in partnership with Northumberland Libraries.

Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Culture, Heritage and Libraries, said:

“This collaboration between Morgan Sindall, Northumberland Libraries and the County Council highlights the importance of public/private partnerships in fostering community engagement and education. I’d like to thank Morgan Sindall for their contribution which showed children how their own ‘marvellous’ ideas could be turned into reality through engineering and innovation.”

Supporting Health and Wellbeing initiatives at Ashington Cricket Club

Following on from last year’s support of Ashington Cricket Club’s Women’s Team, stations contractor Morgan Sindall Infrastructure are again showing their commitment to local health and wellbeing initiatives by sponsoring advertising boards at the ground.

The Northumberland Line team were recently joined by England Cricketer Mark Wood, who made his debut playing for Ashington Cricket Club, to celebrate the partnership alongside Morgan Sindall Infrastructure’s Planning Apprentice Nick Shaw and Site Engineer Charlie Minshaw.

Ashington Cricket Club Chair Steve Storey said:

“As a community cricket club, which is run by volunteers, we rely heavily on local businesses who support the Club by sponsorship. When work on the Northumberland Line began, we quickly developed a 'neighbourly' relationship, and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure sponsored our thriving Women's cricket team last season. This was a huge boost for the team, which raised the profile of women's cricket within our club and the town. We are all excited about the opening and are extremely grateful for the support we have received”.

Rail Safety Support at Bedlington Academy

Northumberland County Council supported Network Rail to deliver rail safety sessions at Bedlington Academy as part of a "Prison, Me, No Way" day of presentations for Year 9 students.

This followed on from similar sessions that were delivered at the academy in late 2023 and reinforced the message that there's more trains running on the line and that will increase again when the passenger service starts. The sessions were very well received with many of the students remembering the previous session, which shows that the messaging has stayed with them.
